How do we get to Yellowknife from here?
Canadian North, First Air and Air Canada offers several jet flights into Yellowknife daily. Flight
time from Edmonton International Airport is about 1.5 hours. The driving
distance from Edmonton, Alberta to Yellowknife is approximately 1500 km on a newly-paved highway.
Road travel during the Mackenzie River fall freeze up and spring break
up can be interrupted on short notice. Most travellers do this trip in
two days, stopping over in High Level, Alberta.
Accommodations
Is there housing available on Base?
There is no actual Base as JTFNHQ and its lodger units are located
throughout Yellowknife, hence there are no PMQs. Military families can
take advantage of Public Works and Government Services (PWGSC) housing
which is offered to all federal departments. The majority of JTFN personnel
elect to live in this pool housing which for the most part, is of a townhouse
variety. A limited number of detached and semi-detached housing units
are available as well as apartments for unaccompanied members. PWGSC housing
is located throughout the city and is subject to availability.
Other accommodations are available in Yellowknife, but be advised that it is somewhat expensive to rent or purchase housing on the local economy.

What kinds of recreational activities exist in Yellowknife?
A city of 20,000, Yellowknife offers a variety of recreational facilities
including a pool, three arenas (ice surfaces), a movie theatre, performing
arts theatre, curling rink, golf course, cross country ski trails, and
a beach.
Numerous social groups, organized sports and arts and music festivals are also popular.

What is shopping like in Yellowknife?
There are several major chains and numerous small shops that provide a wide selection of products comparable to those found in the south. For some of the more exclusive items, catalogue shopping is popular.
Are groceries more expensive?
Prices on average are somewhat more expensive than in the south. Two major grocery chains offer standard fare. Occasionally, specialty items are more difficult to come by.
What restaurants are there in Yellowknife?
There are several fast food chains offering everything from pizza and burgers to subs and donuts. Local restaurants also provide fine dining opportunities with a northern flair.
