we would be happy to implement your idea or refer you to the appropriate
community service.
If
you would like to run a workshop or class yourself (i.e. crafts, computers,
cooking, etc.) we can help with the organizing. You can book space to
run classes through our office.
Information
and Referral Services
Our information services are designed to welcome new arrivals and provide
useful information on MFRC services and community resources.
- Community Information Line
This bilingual service offers information on local schools, doctors, or even where to get the best deal on kids' parkas.
- Resource Library
The Resource Library houses books, pamphlets and videos on topics ranging from parenting and personal growth to health and finances. Here you will find local tourist information, posting packages from other MFRCs, a wide selection of pocketbooks, family games and videos which are available for loan.
- Equipment Lending Closet
From snowshoes and PFDs to strollers and high chairs…if you need it, we might have it. Give us a call to sign out items at no charge.
- Outreach/Newcomer Welcome Program
Volunteers reach out with a hearty northern welcome to personnel newly arrived in Yellowknife, with a useful information package and small gift. An effort is made to draw the family's attention to the MFRC programs and activities which may be of particular interest to them.
- After Hours Use
The MFRC is available for meetings and small gatherings during off-hours.
Education Information on Posting Service
This MFRC service provides comprehensive and up-to-date information regarding
the educational programs, resources, and facilities available within Yellowknife.
This information is offered in hard copy or through
the Education section of this website.
Employment Assistance Program
Offered are services focused on supporting families of CF members in their educational and employment pursuits through a range of direct, individualized services, including:
- Information and referral to appropriate
local resources
- Resume writing/updating assistance
- Job search/interview skill development
- Employment related workshops
- Maintenance of a resource database of employment
and educational resources
The MFRC offers the following services for work-related, educational or personal purposes:
- Computer with
a variety software packages
- Internet access
with e-mail capabilities
- Fax machine
- Laminator
- Photocopier
Education & Quality of Life Program
- Special Events/Workshops: The MFRC organizes events during the year involving family-oriented activities, such as National Family Week celebrations, the Halloween Party, Community Christmas Breakfast, Annual Chili Cook-off and National Volunteer Week Event. The MFRC offers workshops based on community interest, and advertises many of the City's activities/workshops.
- Deployment Support: Frequent short-term taskings are a reality for many CF families in Yellowknife. The Deployment Support Program offers support through Centre outreach calls, drop-in and Community Coffee Mornings. Respite childcare is always available through the Centre. The resource library also houses numerous resource materials dealing with deployment.
- Support Groups: The MFRC is able to make referrals to local support groups upon request.
- Second Language Training: The MFRC coordinates the provision of second language training for military spouses in Yellowknife.
Volunteer Development and Involvement Program
Volunteers are the heart of the MFRC organization and play an essential role in all aspects of the Centre's operations. Their involvement allows us to offer a broad range of services to the military community in Yellowknife.
Volunteer opportunities abound at the MFRC and everyone is encouraged to share their talents and time. Community volunteers serve on the Board of Directors, assist with newsletter production, and our outreach service. They are also actively involved with youth programs, fundraising activities and quality of life workshops and activities. Youth are especially welcome to bring their enthusiasm and energy to MFRC special events.
The MFRC supports its volunteers by providing orientation, job specific training, placement in a suitable position, supervision, and volunteer recognition. Personal and professional development opportunities are also available throughout the year.
Child/Youth Program
A variety of services for families with children and youth is offered throughout the year, including:
- Parents and Tots
This popular weekly get-together encourages social interaction and stimulates parenting skills for families with pre-school aged children. Supervised childcare is offered for part of the program to allow for speakers, crafts and other social activities for parents. - Casual/Respite Childcare
Casual childcare services are offered one morning per week to offer a break to parents who are at home with pre-school aged children. Short-term respite childcare is always available through the MFRC during daytime hours.
- Casual Childcare During MFRC Programs
Childcare is facilitated by the Centre during MFRC programs and military family briefings.
- MFRC Storytime (Cooperative Play Group)
This hour-long bi-weekly activity allows for parents and toddlers to participate in child development activities through the use of story and song.
- Come and Play Nursery School
This interactive program, designed for 3 and 4 year olds, is offered twice weekly with the focus on socialization and learning through play.
Emergency Childcare Services
The primary goal of this service is to provide military families with paid emergency childcare for up to 72 hours during an emergency or deployment situation. The secondary goal is to act as a resource for parents who require short or long term care by providing a list of regulated and/or approved childcare providers/facilities available to parents in non-emergency situations.
Crisis Intervention Program
The MFRC provides a response capability which addresses emergency or difficult
situations. This includes:
- assessment services
- facilitation of a crisis intervention home
visit by an appropriate professional
- provision of emergency short term support
- referral to appropriate local community agencies
- promotion of and referral to the Canadian
Forces Members Assistance Program (CFMAP) a 24-hour crisis line
- provision of a resource library
- liaison with the Emergency Childcare Coordinator
to ensure childcare in times of need.
